A native of East Texas, Kim Harper discovered her passion for design early on. After earning her degree from The University of Texas, she found inspiration during her summers in the Mexican heartland—a place rich with vibrant markets and timeless blacksmithing traditions. On one fateful trip, she purchased a unique wrought iron fixture that captured the attention of a local Austin builder. This serendipitous moment sparked the idea that would become Illuminaries.

When Kim returned to Mexico to source another identical fixture for the builder, she was directed to a small welding shop on the edge of town. There, she witnessed master artisans transforming raw iron into works of art. Moved by their dedication, she arranged to have her own designs produced for the Austin market. As a single mother, Kim wanted a career that offered both creative fulfillment and time with her children, so she launched Illuminaries.com. The business thrived for a decade, importing and selling exceptional iron fixtures to designers, builders, and luxury homeowners across North America and Europe.

Eventually, concerns about cross-border travel prompted Kim to move production to Austin in 2010. After months of preparation—finding skilled welders, premium materials, and solidifying local supply chains—she opened her own manufacturing facility in Texas. This pivotal transition allowed Kim to personally oversee every aspect of production, ensuring that each Illuminaries fixture upholds her exacting standards for craftsmanship, authenticity, and design integrity.

Today, Kim remains intimately involved in every project, personally consulting with homeowners, interior designers, and builders to create bespoke lighting that captures both the spirit of their interiors and the expertise of generations-old craftsmanship.
